Wangara Lookout and Bridle Gap, SA

Day Trip From: Wilpena Pound Resort
May 2021

The final walk of our stay was to Bridle Gap and back – with a small detour to Wangara Lookout on the way.

This walk started from our cabin and took us through Pound Gap and into Wilpena Pound – where we took the side trail to Wangara Lookout (about 1.5km return). The trail also passed the old Hills Homestead buildings.

A track then took us across Wilpena Pound – so it was flat terrain until we reached the climb up to Bridle Gap at the far edge of the pound. It was only a 100m ascent up to Bridle Gap – a place that gets its name because it used to be the only place that you could enter Wilpena Pound on horseback (apart from the main way in at Pound Gap).

From Bridle Gap there were views out the back of the pound and it was also the location of the boundary of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.

The return route was back the same way that we came – but without the detour to Wangara Lookout. With a total distance covered of 21km, this walk was the longest one that we did during our stay in Wilpena Pound. We also managed to spot our first ever Striated Pardalote.
