Clare, SA
Clare was the final destination of our three day drive to ‘escape from NSW‘ – and it was the only booking in South Australia that we had. Any case of COVID-19 in NSW during our journey would mean automatic closure of the South Australian border before we got there – so it was risky to book a longer stay (usually a significant part was non-refundable).
Clare is the main town in the Clare Valley – a famous wine growing region, and it would be fair to say that the main focus of our visit was wine-tasting.
Because we only had three nights booked in the Clare Central Motel, as soon as we arrived we booked nine more nights in the Clare Valley (in Watervale, about 15km away) – yes we needed to make sure that we had plenty more time for wine-tasting…
During our stay in Clare we spent a full day walking on the Riesling Trail (which includes wine-tasting), and also went wine-tasting at Knappstein and Mr Mick – both of which were a short walk from our motel.
One evening after work we went to the Gleeson Wetlands, just outside of town – and we saw our first ‘Adelaide Rosella’ – a variant of the Crimson Rosella with different colouring that is only found in South Australia.
On the day that we checked out we had lunch in Indii, an Indian restaurant in Clare.
