Ellery Creek Big Hole is part of Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park and it was a one hour drive from our base in Alice Springs to get there.

The ‘big hole’ refers to a permanent waterhole which has formed where Ellery Creek passes through a gap in the rocks – and from the car park it was only a five minute walk to admire the waterhole and drink our coffee. There were quite a few birds around but we didn’t spot anything new.

After we finished our coffee we headed off on the Dolomite Walk – a 3km loop with good views of the various rock formations in the area.

It was then time for a lunch break, and after lunch we walked for 15 minutes each way along the Ellery Creek Loop Walk (a long-distance 32km trail), so that we were back at the car park by 2pm in order to head off to our next destination – Ochre Pits.
