New England National Park, NSW

Day Trip From: Armidale
January 2021

After just over an hour’s drive from Armidale we arrived at our destination – Point Lookout in New England National Park. It was an overcast and slightly drizzly day – and the view from the lookout was just a sea of white – there was absolutely zero visibility. We hadn’t realised that Point Lookout is 1563m above sea-level – and so when it’s poor weather it’s not much of a lookout.

Undeterred, we set off on a walk through the forest. The forest was very dense and mossy – and full of mist. It was quite atmospheric and we wandered around for a while – realising that there weren’t going to be any views from any of the viewpoints.

We didn’t see a single other person on the trails, and we found a deserted (apart from kangaroos) picnic area for lunch.

After lunch, it started to rain a bit more – so we called it a day and went back to Armidale at about 3pm.
