Wave Rock, WA
March 2024
Wave Rock is a pretty famous rock near the small town of Hyden. It is famous because it is shaped like a wave, and therefore everybody wants to see it. Nowadays of course, everybody also wants to post a photo of themselves ‘surfing’ the wave on Instagram.
We arrived at 8.20am – yes, you have to be early to beat the crowds, and it was quiet enough for us to get a photo of the rock with nobody else in it, AND also photos of ourselves ‘surfing’ the wave (yes of course we did, because Jazz Nomads is a fancy version of Instagram just for us 🙂 )
It turned out that you could also actually walk up to the top of the rock, along it, and then back down the other side. So that’s what we did, and we enjoyed some views from the top of the rock before the steep descent back down.
There was also something called ‘The Wave Rock Walk Circuit’, which was a 4km loop from Wave Rock through the bush to another rock formation called Hippo’s Yawn, and then through some salt lakes and a resort to finish back at the rock.
When we attempted this walk we were greeted with ‘no entry’ type signs and so we went back to the tourist information to ask them what was going on. They told us it was fine to do the walk and that the signs were just there to keep people out of the new swimming pool they had built at the resort. We therefore attempted the walk again but in the other direction.
