Goolwa Beach, SA
Goolwa Beach was our first long stay in South Australia, and we picked it at short notice because we couldn’t book anything too far ahead in case the border from NSW got closed due to a COVID-19 case. We knew nothing about the area when we booked it, but we found plenty to do when we got there.
We stayed in a large house which had three bedrooms and was on two seperate floors with separate entrances – so we had upstairs to live in, and downstairs became the ‘office’ and we actually had to go outside the house and back in again to ‘go to work’. The place was at a bargain price because it was the ‘cold season’ and also because demand was low because of interstate travel restrictions due to COVID-19.
From our house it was just a ten minute walk over some sand dunes to get to a huge beach (around 13km long), so we spent quite a lot of time walking up and down the beach looking at the crashing waves. Goolwa as a town had quite a few shops and we also found a distillery/brewery.
During our time at Goolwa Beach we walked the entire coastline from Goolwa North to Waitpinga cliffs (around 40km) (not all at once) visiting places along the way (Port Elliot, Victor Harbor, Granite Island, The Bluff).
We also walked to the nearby Goolwa Barrage (around 5km each way), and to Coorong Quays on Hindmarsh Island (also around 5km each way)
Other places that we visited were to Adelaide, Carrickalinga, Aldinga Beach, Murray Mouth, Deep Creek Conservation Park, and Clayton Bay.
