Bald Head track, WA
February 2024
The Bald Head track is in Torndirrup National Park and is one of the most famous walks in the area due to its spectacular coastal scenery. It’s only a 25 minute drive from Albany so it’s a very popular walk.
It turned out that the track was due to be closed for maintenance shortly after we arrived, leaving us with only a few options for which day to walk the track. The choice was between a cloudy day during the public holiday weekend, or a sunny afternoon after work.
Ordinarily this would be an easy choice, but the walk was officially described as taking six hours and requiring ‘a high level of fitness, experience and preparation’…
Further research revealed that the track had been upgraded due to erosion and was now a lot easier to walk. Some people reckoned they had completed it in around four hours.
So, in the end we decided to go on a sunny afternoon after work and walk for two hours before turning around – this would give us around 45 minutes leeway before darkness fell. We hoped that we would get to the end of the track, but if not – then so be it…!
We set off at 1.50pm at a blistering pace and arrived at Bald Head pretty much exactly two hours later. There was time for a 20 minute break for snacks, and then back down the trail we went. There was hardly anybody else on the trail, which was great! ๐
In the end, the walk took a total of just over four hours – and so we were pretty pleased with ourselves ๐
