Litchfield National Park, NT

Day Trip From: Bees Creek and Humpty Doo
June - July 2021

We went to Litchfield National Park (1.25 hours drive from Humpty Doo) twice during our stay in the top end. The first time was a public holiday in June and the second time was a weekend at the end of July.

We went twice because after our first day in the park there were still a few areas that we hadn’t had time to visit, and we also wanted to see the park when it was hopefully a bit less crowded and a bit further into the dry season.

There are various walks, waterfalls, and view points spread along around 50km of road – and so the park is fairly spread out. The first place that you come to is a viewing area where you can see hundreds of large termite mounds – we stopped there on both of our visits.

During our visits to the park we walked the Cascades trails (our longest walk) and also the Wangi loop walk, the Tolmer Creek walk, the Florence Creek walk to Buley Hole, and the Tjaetaba Falls walk.

Wangi Falls is at the centre of the park and has a cafe, toilets, and a large picnic area. It’s apparently a very popular swimming spot, but at the time of our visit the pool under the falls was closed for swimming because there was a crocodile in the area that hadn’t been caught and removed yet (since April apparently – so it must take a while to catch them!)
