Humpty Doo, NT
This was our main stay in the top end, and we had a self-contained cottage that had been built by the owners in a corner of their property. It was in a separate fenced area and so was nice and private. The driveway was shared and we would see the owners when they drove in and out – but we couldn’t see their house from our cottage.
There were a few ‘technical’ issues with the cottage such as the septic tank overflowing and the wifi data running out – but these were rectified pretty quickly and it was a good place to stay.
The solution for the septic tank was to empty it every couple of weeks – which involved a giant truck driving on to the property, sticking a big tube in to the tank, and then sucking out the waste.
The property was on the main highway, so there was not much good walking to be done without driving. However, we were close to Fogg Dam and Berry Springs and we went to both of these places at least once a week for walking / swimming.
We visited Darwin most weekends, and also went a few times for lunch to Palmerston – a city/suburb just outside Darwin where we found an Indian restaurant and a Filipino restaurant.
While we were here we also took the opportunity to visit Kakadu National Park. As it was a two hour drive and there was quite a lot to see, we booked a night in Jabiru and turned it into a two day ‘day trip’.
The good
- Great location for visits to Fogg Dam
- Kakadu National Park
- Laksa in Darwin
- Lots of birdlife
The not so good
- Overflowing septic tank
- On a main road – nowhere easy to walk
