Erre walks – Kakadu National Park, NT

Day Trip From: Humpty Doo
August 2021

The Erre area (also known as East Alligator) was where we did our longest walk in Kakadu National Park – although technically speaking it was actually two walks joined together – the Bardedjilidji walk and the Sandstone and River Bush walk.

The Bardedjilidji walk was a 2.5km loop, and from halfway around that loop the 6.5km Sandstone and River Bush walk started – so the total distance walked was around 9km.

The Bardedjilidji walk weaved through sandstone rock formations and there was also a bit of rock art, whereas the Sandstone and River Bush walk went more out into the bush and followed Catfish Creek and Alligator River. There were good views over to Arnhem Land from this walk.

We set off at 10.40am and it took about three hours to complete the two loops. It was one of the quietest areas that we visited in Kakadu – probably due to the fact that because it was the middle of the day it was baking hot – and so nobody else wanted to do the walk at that time of day!
