Innes National Park, SA

Day Trip From: Port Vincent
October 2021

Innes National Park is located at the far end of the Yorke Peninsula, and the entrance was a one and a half hour drive from our base in Port Vincent.

After entering the park, our first stop was for coffee and walking the Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk – a 2km loop trail with views over the coast and an old jetty.

After completing that walk, we continued driving through the park. We saw a lot of emus by the roadside, and so stopped for a few photo opportunities before arriving at West Cape Lookout and doing a short loop walk – a 1km circuit with good sea views all round and a strange looking lighthouse made of steel – which apparently was still operational.

Continuing through the park, we then drove to the start of the Royston Head hike. This was the longest walk that we did – a coastal walk of 5km return.

After this it was time to turn around, and on our way back through the park we stopped at Inneston – an old abandoned gypsum mining town – where we followed a trail through the ruins (the Inneston Historic Walk – 2km return).
