Cygnet, TAS

Dec 2022 / Jan 2023 - 10 days

Cygnet was our stay for the Christmas break – yes, nine whole days in a row without working. We stayed in a really nice cottage which was pretty much next door to the main house on a rural property around 3km from the centre of Cygnet.

The hosts were super friendly and kept bringing us eggs and berries from the garden – not to mention homemade sourdough and biscuits! On Christmas morning they left us hot croissants and put up a Merry Christmas sign outside our front door. 🙂

The cottage had a lovely patio area at the back with an outside table and chairs – so we made good use of it each evening as we had pretty good weather for most of the time that we were there.

We went out for day trips to Hartz Mountains National Park, South Cape, the Kingston area, and kunanyi (Mt. Wellington) – as well as shorter trips around the Huon Valley near Cygnet. We also walked down to Cygnet a few times (around a 40 minute walk) and visited the area by the bay at the bottom of the town, where there was a 30 minute coastal walk alongside a wildlife reserve.

Cygnet itself was a small, pleasant town and when we explored the peninsula around it, we found a few nice walks, some beaches, and a place that made cheese and vodka from sheep milk – called GrandvEwe.

The good

  • The hospitality of our hosts
  • The cottage and garden
  • Nice walk down to Cygnet and along the bay
  • Lots of good day trips

The not so good

  • Quite a long drive to some of the National Parks
  • Not much wildlife in the garden
