Alligator Gorge, SA

Day Trip From: Port Augusta
April 2021

Alligator Gorge is part of Mount Remarkable National Park in the Flinders Ranges. It was about an hour’s drive from our base in Port Augusta.

We started off with the Alligator Gorge Ring Route (our version) – which is a 9km loop walk that starts along a fire trail and then descends into Alligator Gorge. It then follows the gorge all the way to an area called ‘The Narrows’ – the narrowest part of the gorge. The trail then goes steeply back up to the starting point.

‘Officially’ the loop walk actually goes in the reverse direction (hence this was ‘our version’) and starts from The Narrows. We decided to walk it in reverse as we figured that it would be less crowded reaching The Narrows in the heat of the day instead of the morning (most people just walk in The Narrows).

It was still pretty busy though when we reached The Narrows – not really surprising as it was Easter Weekend.

After we had finished the Ring Route we also took a short walk to nearby Gorge Lookout to check out the view.
