Lochiel – Lake Bumbunga, SA

Day Trip From: Port Augusta
April 2021

We passed through the small town of Lochiel on our drive from Port Augusta to Goolwa Beach – and we were surprised to find a large pink lake with a monster in it!

Lake Bumbunga (which is right next to the town) is a salt lake and it can appear in various shades of pink. It is also home to the ‘Loch Eel Monster’ – also known as the ‘Lochiel Ness Monster. The ‘monster’ used to be made of tyres and has been in the lake for a long time. The modern monster is made of fibreglass and has become a popular tourist attraction.

The lake was fairly dry on the day that we were there and so we were able to walk on the salty lakebed and check out the monster up close.
