Karlu Karlu (Devil’s Marbles), NT

Day Trip From: Tennant Creek and Tennant Creek
June & August 2021

Karlu Karlu (Devil’s Marbles) are giant rounded granite boulders which have naturally formed in the desert over the last 1.7 billion years. The area is an official conservation reserve with parking, walking trails and a campsite.

The reserve is about 100km south of Tennant Creek and is just off the main highway. We visited twice – once on our way north to the Darwin area in June, and then again two months later on our way back.

Our first visit was in the afternoon for just over an hour. We followed the Karlu Karlu walk, the Mayijangu walk, the Yakkula walk, and then finished at Nyanjiki Lookout. The total distance walked was about 3km.

Our second visit was in the morning and we followed the Nurrku walk – a 4km loop that goes further into the desert and away from the main set of boulders.
