Mount Ohlssen Bagge, SA
May 2021
Mount Ohlssen Bagge is one of the mountains on the edge of Wilpena Pound, and the route that we took to the summit started from our cabin, followed the Wilpena Pound Gap trail for a short time, and then ascended to the top of the mountain.
It was the first walk of our stay and it was a fairly short one (6.5km return). As the resort is located at 540m above sea level and the summit is at 923m, then the vertical ascent was about 380m. We had lunch at the top with great views of both inside and outside of Wilpena Pound.
The mountain was named in 1851 after an engineer called Ohlssen Bagge – who was a business partner of an early surveyor of the mountain. Apparently it was also known as ‘Mount John’ for a while because tour bus drivers thought it was an ‘easier name to pronounce’ for tourists?!
