It takes about nine hours of driving to get from the Fleurieu Peninsula to Doreen on the outskirts of Melbourne, where my sister lives.

As our ‘official’ driving time limit is 8 hours and 15 minutes in one day (yes, we make the rules),  we broke this journey up into two days and drove over a weekend.

Horsham is more or less halfway between the two, so that’s where we stayed. It was almost dark and very cold when we arrived, and it was even colder when we woke up, with a temperature of not much above zero…
