Kata Tjuta (also known as the Olgas) was about an hour and a half’s drive from our base at Curtin Springs Roadhouse. It is part of Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and about 25km away from Uluru.

Kata Tjuta means ‘many heads’ in the local indigenous language, and the area is a sacred site. It consists of 36 large rock domes of various shapes and sizes, with the highest dome being 546m high – about 200m higher than Uluru.

There were two walks to do there – the Valley of the Winds (7.5km circuit), and Walpa Gorge (2.5km return).

We started with the Valley of the Winds circuit walk which goes right into the rock formations and passes through two viewpoints (Karu Lookout and Karingana Lookout). The trail was steep and rocky in parts and there seemed to be a completely different view around every corner.

After we finished this walk we drove over to the sunset viewing area (even though it was only 1.30pm) and checked out the view from there. We then continued on to the car park for the Walpa Gorge Walk.

The gorge walk was flat and easy and went deep into a very steep-sided gorge – complete with some greenery and a waterhole.
