Doreen, Melbourne, VIC
Doreen is a suburb on the far fringes of north Melbourne – which just happens to be where my sister LB lives. We were paying a visit on our way to take the ferry over to Tasmania, and we stayed for just under two weeks.
Doreen itself is not much to write home about (no offence LB! ๐ ) – but if you like fast food you are well catered for by a nearby McDonalds and KFC. There is also a grassy reserve nearby, complete with massive overhead electricity pylons – but also with a big mob of kangaroos and lots of frogs that make a cool noise. We also discovered a really nice walk along the Plenty River which started only a few kilometres away and passed alongside a deep gorge.
There were a couple of good day trips walking in nearby National Parks, and one afternoon we went to ‘proper’ Melbourne and visited the suburbs of Preston, Thornbury, and Northcote for a walking, eating, and drinking session.
We also managed to eat a lot of ice-cream for dessert, and LB’s cats made friends with us after about 4 days ๐
The good
- Good walking areas for days out not too far away
- Kangaroos and cool-sounding frogs just around the corner
- LB’s hospitality and friendly cats
- The Plenty River walk
The not so good
- It’s pretty far from Melbourne!
