Hillwood, TAS
Hillwood is about 25km from Launceston, and is in a rural area. You have to drive a bit to get pretty much anywhere, and the two closest places which were a five minute drive away were the Hillwood Berry Farm – where we went for a pick-your-own raspberry session (they are more famous for strawberries, but it had been so busy they had no more left to pick) and Mount Direction historic reserve which was the nearest place to walk that wasn’t a windy road with no pavement.
We stayed in an extension of someone’s house, which was kind of like a less fancy (and much cheaper) version of our previous stay in Riverside. It was fully self-contained with cooking facilities and a cute little outside patio area especially made for drinking beers on a hot afternoon (well, that’s what we say anyway…).
The location was good for exploring the Tamar Valley area, and we had trips after work out to George Town and Beauty Point as well as weekend trips further afield to Port Sorell and Bridport.
We also went back to Launceston a few times to revisit the Cataract Gorge, go shopping, visit Trevallyn Reserve one last time, and of course eat the delicious Vietnamese bao that we discovered while staying in Riverwood (three more times 🙂 )
The good
- Berry ice-cream at Hillwood Berry Farm
- Hot weather and beers on the patio
- Still close to Launceston (25 mins drive)
The not so good
- Needed to drive to go for a walk
