Unley, Adelaide, SA

Dec 2024 / Jan 2025 - 38 days

The school holidays had arrived – meaning that anywhere by the ocean had been booked up months in advance and at double the normal price. We needed to stay in the Adelaide area to continue CC’s recovery from her operation and wait for her next appointment with the surgeon – so we left Aldinga Beach and moved to a unit in Unley, Adelaide.

Our unit was in a block of apartments near King William Road – which was a street full of posh wine bars and over-priced clothes shops and restaurants. On the plus side, the shops in nearby Unley Shopping Centre were more normal, and there was a Latino supermarket and a craft beer place in nearby Goodwood.

The unit was clean and well-equipped, and we also enjoyed counting the number of times that our neighbours came back with fast food (at least once a day).

We spent our time there mostly reading and relaxing on the very hot days (it was over 36 degrees quite a lot of days) – and on Christmas Day we had our traditional Christmas Curry. We even managed to find a jigsaw puzzle in the unit – so we also did a ‘Christmas Jigsaw’.

We had a fair few trips out to various cafes and restaurants that we liked (in particular: Opa Alfajores and Thiruna Sri Lankan restaurant), and we also visited Adelaide Central Market to try some gin made with actual green ants – which then inspired us to find a rooftop bar (something that Adelaide is not really famous for…)

On our longer trips out we went to Belair National Park, Victoria Park Wetlands, the Botanic Gardens, Greenfields Wetlands, and various overly-busy beachside suburbs.

CC continued her swimming regime in two different locations, and we even managed to attend our first meeting of ‘The Adelaide Spanish Language Meetup Group’ in The Jade – a pub in central Adelaide.

A historic milestone was also reached in that ‘Jazzy Jeff’ (our Honda Jazz) had a birthday and turned five years old. This unfortunately meant getting a mandatory safety check done before we could renew the vehicle registration.

The good

  • Very clean unit
  • Opa Alfajores
  • Thiruna Sri Lankan restaurant
  • Saw two new birds
  • Time off work to relax

The not so good

  • Many days over 36 degrees
  • CC still recovering from her operation
  • nearby King William Road overly posh
